Blood Group & Rh Typing

Determine your ABO blood group and Rhesus (Rh) status — essential information for pregnancy, surgery, transfusion and personal records.

Knowing your blood group and Rhesus status is essential health information for pregnancy, surgery, emergencies and transfusion — and it only needs to be established once.

About the Blood Group & Rh Typing

This test identifies your ABO blood group (A, B, AB or O) and whether you are Rhesus (Rh) positive or negative. It is important for safe blood transfusion, for surgical planning, and particularly during pregnancy, where Rh incompatibility between mother and baby needs to be managed. Many people simply want a reliable record of their blood group for personal and emergency reference.

Preparation and turnaround

A simple venous blood sample is taken with no fasting or preparation required. The appointment takes only a few minutes and results are usually available within one working day. Your blood group does not change over your lifetime, so a single accurate test provides a lasting record.

Frequently asked questions

Does my blood group ever change?

No. Your ABO group and Rh status are genetically determined and remain the same throughout life, so the test only needs to be done once.

Why does Rh status matter in pregnancy?

If an Rh-negative mother carries an Rh-positive baby, antibodies can develop that affect the pregnancy. Knowing your status allows this to be managed proactively.

Is fasting required?

No. Blood group and Rh typing needs no fasting or special preparation.

Some tests require fasting. We'll confirm any preparation (such as fasting for 8–10 hours) when we confirm your appointment. When in doubt, ask us at booking.
